Cognos Analytics is IBM’s leading Business Intelligence Platform. Analysts from any field can utilize it to derive insights from their data. Our goal is to help analysts find answers faster without compromising accuracy.

my contribution

I designed and prototyped user interfaces for Cognos π and conducted research in the form of user and SME interviews, user testing sessions, and analyzing over 100 Cognos product reviews.

This project took place over the course of 7 weeks with a team of 5 UX designers, 1 content designer, and 3 offering managers.

Meet Ricki, a New Business Analyst

Ricki has a BA in marketing and a minimal background in analytics. She is starting a new job in which she is tasked with using Cognos Analytics to deliver new business insights.

Being fairly new to analytics, she isn’t quite sure how insights are generated in Cognos or how to explain their accuracy. Her work cannot contain mistakes, otherwise her insights will be considered invalid. In addition to this, Cognos has a steep learning curve that makes the beginning of Ricki’s journey especially difficult and time consuming.

We need to find a way to help Ricki, as well as other new analysts, find answers quickly and discover connections in their data that they may not have seen otherwise.

An AI-Augmented Cognos Experience

key insights

As soon as your data is uploaded, AI-generated insights appear in several formats. This provides you with a starting place.

NLP SEARCH

Cognos Pi automatically populates the search bar with potential queries based on “smarts” (IBM’s augmented intelligence) derived from your data.

Visualizations appear that match specific questions asked. “Smarts” allows Cognos Pi to adjust to your individual needs, getting you to the insights you need faster.

insight details

Cognos Pi suggests other insights based on the industry you previously selected, and you can drill down further to find out how Cognos Pi came up with that insight. Some visualizations include third-party data that allows you to explore new data interactions.

reporting and sharing

After pinning visualizations to a dashboard, Cognos Pi generates the best layout based on the way it understands your end goal. You can send reports directly to your manager or other analysts.

visual ai profile

As Cognos Pi learns and adapts to your usage patterns, it simultaneously builds your AI profile to show how it perceives you. You can also see your completed tasks and milestones which are meant to increase motivation.

Sketches

I created several sketches centered around the idea that eventually became the visual AI profile. I focused on creating features that would help Cognos Pi get to know the user quickly in order to start curating a personal profile from the first time user signs on.
